Comforting baked French toast casserole soaked in a creamy custard, perfect for lazy Sunday mornings.

  • 1 loaf of bread (French or Challah)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Powdered sugar (for serving)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Cube the bread into cubes and place them in the baking dish.
  3. Whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring they are well coated.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it sit in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  6. Bake the casserole for 45-50 minutes, or until golden and set.
  7. Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar and with maple syrup on the side.

Notes

Using day-old bread yields the best results. For a healthier twist, use almond milk and reduce the sugar.
