  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 large apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan, lining the bottom with parchment paper.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and stir in brown sugar until smooth. Pour into the prepared cake pan.
  3. Toss the apple slices with lemon juice and cinnamon, then arrange over the caramel in the cake pan.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  6. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
  7. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients alternately with milk until just combined.
  8. Pour the batter over the apples in the cake pan.
  9. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  10. Cool for 10 minutes before inverting onto a serving plate.
  11. Serve warm or at room temperature.
