  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tbsp orange juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Orange slices (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven and prepare pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, mix together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Incorporate wet ingredients: Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until combined.
  4. Add the finishing touches: Stir in the boiling water and orange zest until the mixture is smooth.
  5. Bake your masterpiece: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  6. Cool your cakes: Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before flipping them out onto wire racks.
  7. Make the buttercream: Beat the softened butter until creamy, then gradually add powdered sugar, orange juice, and vanilla extract.
  8. Frosting the first layer: Once the cakes have cooled completely, frost the top of one layer with the buttercream.
  9. Assemble the layers: Place the second layer on top of the frosted cake and cover with more frosting.
  10. Garnish and serve: Garnish with orange slices if desired. Slice and serve.
