Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound chicken breast (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs (beaten)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ginger powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • Vegetable oil (for frying, to taste)
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (ensure it’s halal)
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • Sesame seeds (to taste, for garnish)
  • Sliced green onions (to taste, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chicken Coating: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, ginger powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Bread the Chicken: Dip each piece of chicken into the beaten eggs, allowing excess to drip off, then coat it generously with the flour mixture.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, heat enough vegetable oil over medium-high heat to cover the bottom by about 1 inch.
  4. Fry the Chicken: Carefully add the coated chicken pieces to the hot oil, frying in batches until golden brown and crispy (about 4-5 minutes per side).
  5. Make the Zesty Sauce: In a small saucepan, combine the fresh orange juice, sugar, soy sauce, rice vinegar, and orange zest, simmering until thickened (about 3-4 minutes).
  6. Combine Chicken and Sauce: In a large bowl, gently toss the crispy chicken with the zesty sauce until evenly coated.
  7. Serve with a Flourish: Transfer the sauced chicken to a serving platter and sprinkle sesame seeds and sliced green onions on top.

Notes

For extra crunch, double-bread the chicken. Serve promptly after tossing in sauce to maintain crispiness.
