A cozy baked French toast casserole made with challah or brioche bread, perfect for brunch gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of challah or brioche bread, cut into cubes (about 10 to 12 cups)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk (any type, like whole, almond, or oat)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (or a non-dairy substitute)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Fresh fruits, maple syrup, whipped cream, or powdered sugar, for serving

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Begin by cutting your challah or brioche bread into bite-sized cubes.
  2. Whisk the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, crack the eggs and whisk them together. Add in the milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Combine Bread and Custard: Place the bread cubes in a greased baking dish and pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring every piece soaks up the rich custard.
  4. Chill Overnight (Optional): Cover the baking dish with plastic wrap and let it chill in the refrigerator overnight.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Uncover the casserole and bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
  6. Cool and Serve: Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Use day-old bread for better soaking in the custard. Experiment with flavors by adding chocolate chips or nuts.
