Delicious homemade pretzels with a savory garlic and Parmesan flavor, perfect for snacking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Form the dough: Add flour and 1 teaspoon salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough: Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth. Let it rise in a greased bowl for about an hour, covered.
  4. Preheat the oven: Preheat to 450°F (232°C).
  5. Prepare the boiling solution: In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
  6. Shape the pretzels: Divide dough into pieces and shape each into a pretzel.
  7. Boil the pretzels: Boil each pretzel for about 30 seconds in the baking soda water.
  8. Arrange for baking: Place pretzels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle garlic powder and salt.
  9. Bake to perfection: Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Add the finishing touch: Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.

Notes

Leftover pretzels can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To reheat, pop them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 5-10 minutes.
