1 cup (2 sticks / 226 g) unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing
1 1/2 cups (300 g) granulated sugar
1/2 cup (100 g) packed light brown sugar
4 large eggs, at room temperature
2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 cup (120 g) all-purpose flour
1 cup (85 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tsp fine sea salt or table salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 cup (175 g) semisweet or dark chocolate chips or chunks
Optional: 1/2 cup (60 g) chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
For Garnish: 1 cup (120 g) powdered sugar or 1 cup (170 g) chocolate chips, 1–2 tbsp milk or heavy cream, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, fresh berries for serving
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch (23×33 cm) baking pan and line it with parchment paper.
Melt the butter in a saucepan over low to medium heat until fully melted, then let it cool slightly.
Whisk the granulated sugar and brown sugar into the melted butter until smooth, then add the vanilla.
Add the eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition.
Combine the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder in a separate bowl.
Fold the dry mixture into the wet mixture until no streaks remain, then fold in chocolate chips.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake for 22–28 minutes or until a toothpick comes out mostly clean.
Cool completely in the pan for at least 1–1.5 hours before lifting out.
Cut hearts using cookie cutters, and dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with melted chocolate.
Notes
Ensure eggs are at room temperature for better emulsification. Don’t overmix to keep brownies fudgy.
