Delightful homemade soft pretzels with a chewy texture and golden-brown crust, perfect for snacking or dipping.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 to 4.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Coarse sea salt for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Mix Flour and Salt: Add 4 cups of flour and salt to the yeast mixture, and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead Dough: Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, adding more flour if needed.
  4. Let Dough Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  5. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C).
  6. Prepare Boiling Solution: In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
  7. Shape Pretzels: Divide the dough into equal pieces, roll each into a long rope, and twist into a pretzel shape.
  8. Boil Pretzels: Boil each pretzel in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet.
  9. Brush and Season: Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  10. Bake: Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Cool and Serve: Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve with mustard, cheesy sauce, or sriracha cream. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
