Instructions

  1. Cook the macaroni according to package instructions; drain and set aside.
  2. Melt the butter over medium heat until bubbly and fragrant.
  3. Stir in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, until it turns a light golden color.
  4. Whisk in the milk, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens into a smooth, velvety sauce.
  5. Add shredded cheddar cheese and stir until melted and combined.
  6. Fold the cheese sauce into the cooked macaroni, mixing until every piece is equally coated.
  7. Pour the mac and cheese mixture into a baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  8. Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top if desired.
