A spicy twist on a classic comfort food, these Nashville Hot Mozzarella Sticks feature a crispy exterior and gooey, melty cheese that will ignite your taste buds.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 pieces string cheese (cut in half if short sticks preferred)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups Italian or plain breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • Optional: 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs for extra crunch
  • Oil, for frying (canola or vegetable)
  • For the Nashville Hot Oil:
  • 1/3 cup melted butter or hot frying oil
  • 2–3 tbsp cayenne pepper (adjust to heat preference)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp chili powder
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Begin by preparing the mozzarella sticks: Set up three bowls for breading. In the first bowl, place the flour. In the second bowl, add the beaten eggs. In the third bowl, mix the breadcrumbs, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper (add panko if using).
  2. Dip each piece of string cheese into the flour, then into the eggs, and finally coat them with the breadcrumb mixture. Press gently to ensure the coating adheres well.
  3. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat for frying. Once hot, carefully fry the mozzarella sticks in batches until they are golden brown on all sides, about 2-3 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  4. While the sticks are frying, prepare the Nashville hot oil: In a small bowl or saucepan, mix the melted butter or frying oil with cayenne pepper, brown sugar, paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, and salt.
  5. Once the mozzarella sticks are fried, drizzle the Nashville hot oil over them or toss them in the oil for an even coating.
  6. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For extra crunch, consider adding panko breadcrumbs. Make sure your oil is hot enough before frying for a crispy texture. You can also freeze the breaded sticks for 30 minutes before frying to prevent the cheese from leaking.
