Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–5 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Incorporate the vanilla extract into the mixture.
  6. Alternate adding the flour mixture and buttermilk, starting and ending with the flour mixture.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Cool the cakes in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks.
  10. Prepare the frosting by beating cream cheese, butter, and vanilla until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar.
  11. Assemble by frosting between the layers and on top of the cooled cake.
