Delicious, warm homemade soft pretzels with a golden crust, perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • Coarse sea salt (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, yeast, and sugar in a large mixing bowl and let it sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt, mixing until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 5 minutes.
  3. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour until it doubles in size.
  4. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  5. Bring 10 cups of water to a boil and add baking soda.
  6. Divide the dough into 8 pieces, roll each into a rope, and shape into a pretzel.
  7. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds in the baking soda water.
  8. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  10. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Store leftover pretzels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. For longer storage, freeze them for up to 3 months.
