  • 4 large apples (Granny Smith, Fuji, or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/4 cup butter (unsalted or salted)
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1–2 tbsp maple syrup or honey (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing them into thin wedges.
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat until it begins to bubble.
  3. Sauté the sliced apples in the skillet for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Sweeten the mixture by sprinkling in brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and salt.
  5. Caramelize the apples by stirring and cooking for another 5-7 minutes until they are tender and beautifully caramelized.
  6. Add extra sweetness by drizzling in maple syrup or honey if desired.
  7. Serve your Southern Fried Apples warm out of the skillet.
